Chapter 2: Woocommerce Setup

WooCommerce is the leading eCommerce plugin for WordPress, transforming your website into a fully functional online store. In this section, we’ll walk through installing WooCommerce and getting your shop up and running.

Install WooCommerce Plugin

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Go to Plugins > Add New in the sidebar menu.
  3. Search for “WooCommerce” in the plugin search bar.
  4. Find the official WooCommerce plugin by Automattic.
  5. Click the Install Now button.
  6. When installation is complete, click Activate.

Initial Setup Wizard

After activation, WooCommerce will prompt you to launch the setup wizard. This helps you quickly configure your store’s basic settings.

  1. Click “Run the Setup Wizard” if prompted, or access under WooCommerce > Home.
  2. Set Your Store Details:
    • Business address, currency, and industry.
  3. Select Product Types:
    • Choose what you plan to sell (physical, downloads, subscriptions, etc.).
  4. Choose Payment Methods:
    • Enable payments such as Stripe, PayPal, or cash on delivery.
  5. Setup Shipping:
    • Choose delivery zones and set shipping rates for your products.
  6. Recommended Add-ons:
    • For now, skip or deselect extras unless needed.
  7. Finish and Return to Dashboard.

Confirm WooCommerce Pages

WooCommerce automatically creates core shop pages:

  • Shop
  • Cart
  • Checkout
  • My account

To check if these pages exist:

  1. Go to Pages > All Pages.
  2. Look for “Shop”, “Cart”, “Checkout”, and “My account.”
  3. If any are missing, recreate them and assign the correct shortcode (found in WooCommerce documentation).

Configure Basic Store Settings

Now that WooCommerce is active:

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings.
  2. Review and update:
    • General: Currency, location, basic options.
    • Products: Units, reviews, stock management.
    • Tax: If you collect sales tax.
    • Shipping: Add zones and costs by region.
    • Payments: Connect Stripe, PayPal, or enable bank transfer.
  3. Save changes if you make adjustments.

Add Products

Let’s, for sake of this tutorial, add some products and categories:

Creating Product Categories

Product categories help organize your inventory and improve navigation for customers. Let’s create categories for our coffee shop:

  1. Go to Products > Categories.
  2. Add the following categories:
Single-Origin Coffees
  • Name: Single-Origin Coffees
  • Slug: single-origin
  • Description: Coffee sourced from one specific region, farm, or country, highlighting unique flavor profiles characteristic of individual origins.
Signature Blends
  • Name: Signature Blends
  • Slug: signature-blends
  • Description: House-created blends combining beans from multiple regions to achieve balanced, harmonious flavors designed for versatility.
Ready-to-Drink Specialties
  • Name: Ready-to-Drink
  • Slug: ready-to-drink
  • Description: Packaged beverages like cold brew and nitro coffee, ready for immediate consumption without brewing.
Coffee Accessories
  • Name: Coffee Accessories
  • Slug: coffee-accessories
  • Description: Products that enhance your brewing or drinking experience, from mugs to filters and brewing equipment.
Seasonal Specials
  • Name: Seasonal Specials
  • Slug: seasonal-specials
  • Description: Limited-time blends and items created for holidays, special events, or seasonal flavors.
  1. Click “Add New Category” for each one.
  2. Remember to add some sample images for each category for better UX

Adding Sample Products

Now let’s add our coffee products. We’ll create one detailed example, then you can follow the same process for the rest.

Product 1: Ethiopian Sunrise
  1. Go to Products > Add New.
  2. Product Name: Ethiopian Sunrise
  3. Product Description:
    Bright and floral, Ethiopian Sunrise offers lively notes of jasmine, bergamot, and honey. Sourced from small farms in Yirgacheffe, this light roast coffee is perfect for pour-over and filter methods. Experience the delicate complexity that makes Ethiopian coffee world-renowned.
  4. Product Short Description:
    Bright and floral light roast with notes of jasmine, bergamot, and honey. Perfect for pour-over brewing.
  5. Product Data:
    • Select Simple product
    • Regular price: €13.50
    • Stock status: In stock
    • Weight: 250g
  6. Product Categories:
    • Check Single-Origin Coffees
  7. Product Image: Upload a product image (use generated coffee bag image or placeholder)
  8. Click “Publish”
Product 2: Colombian Velvet

Follow the same steps with these details:

  • Name: Colombian Velvet
  • Description: Colombian Velvet delivers a deliciously smooth cup with hints of caramel, red berries, and milk chocolate. Sourced from the lush mountains of Colombia, this medium-bodied coffee is well-balanced and versatile, ideal for any brewing style. Enjoy each sip as a celebration of Colombia’s coffee heritage.
  • Short description: Smooth Colombian beans with notes of caramel, berries, and milk chocolate. Balanced and versatile for all brew methods.
  • Price: €12.50

Product 3: Sumatra Midnight

Remember to add some sample images for each product for better UX

Setup Product Catalog & Shop Page Display

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize.
  2. Open WooCommerce settings, then Product Catalog.
  3. Look for options like:
    • Shop page display: Set to Products
    • Products per row: Set this to 3
    • Rows per page: Set this to 4
  4. Go back and open Product Images
  5. Look for options like:
    • Thumbnail width: Set to 400
    • Thumbnail cropping: Set to Custom – 4:3

Preview the shop

  1. Go to the Shop page on your site.
  2. You should see your products 3 per row, up to 4 rows
  3. Don’t forget to add some custom logo, navigation menu and some content to the footer.
